Web alarm clock for 3:30 a.m.

As you hand the night-boat catch over to the next person at the landing, set the alarm for 3:30 am so the changeover does not drift while baskets, ice, and notes are being passed along. That leaves the incoming crew a clear half-hour before 4:00 am to finish unloading the catch and check that nothing remains aboard.

Because your handover may finish well before the alarm sounds, keep the browser open and prevent the phone or computer from sleeping. If either shuts down first, the alarm may stay silent and the catch could be left waiting at the quay. Check the volume before stepping away, choose a sound you will recognise over an engine or electric fan, and leave the screen connected to power where the person taking over can reach it.

When unloading at 3:30 am near homes, agree on a quiet signal with the next person instead of calling across the yard. Place the alarm close enough for the person on duty to hear, but away from bedrooms, and reduce unnecessary clatter from crates or metal tubs. A short vibration followed by moderate sound can mark the change without waking children, older relatives, or neighbours before dawn.
