Web alarm clock for 8:12 p.m.

As you finish preparing the rice and leave the kitchen, set the alarm for 8:12 pm so it marks the moment without pulling you back to check the clock. That gives you a clear stopping point while the family is on the way home, with enough room afterward to portion the rice, cover the pot, and have everything settled before 9:00 pm.

Because you are walking away from the rice, leave this alarm page open and keep your phone awake until it rings. Closing the tab or browser means the alarm cannot sound, and a sleeping phone may also prevent the alert, so the rice could sit longer than you intended. Keep the volume audible over conversation, an electric fan, or sounds from the street, then place the phone somewhere you will hear it without leaving it beside steam or splashes.

Once the rice is covered and the kitchen is cleared, check how the evening light falls along your route out of the room. At 8:12 pm, a dim hallway or unlit step can be easy to overlook, especially during a brownout or after switching off the main kitchen light. Turn on the light you will need before leaving, and keep a charged lamp within reach if the household supply is unreliable.
